How Tax Classes Work for Couples in Germany
In Germany, married couples can choose how their income tax is deducted each month. By default, both partners are placed in Steuerklasse 4. However, if there is a significant income difference, switching to a 3/5 combination might be beneficial.
Under the 3/5 model, the higher earner takes Class 3 (lower tax) and the lower earner takes Class 5 (higher tax). This increases the total monthly net income of the household, though the final tax liability for the year remains the same after filing a mandatory tax return.

Benefits
Higher Monthly Cash
Increase your monthly spending power by paying less tax upfront.
Elterngeld Optimization
Switching classes early can increase your future parental leave benefits.
Financial Awareness
Understand exactly why your partner's paycheck looks so small in Class 5.
Use cases
Significant Pay Gap
If one partner earns more than 60% of the household income, 3/5 is usually better.
Parental Leave Planning
The partner planning to take longer leave should move to Class 3 to boost 'Elterngeld'.
Similar Incomes
If both earn roughly the same, stick with 4/4 to avoid a high tax bill during year-end filing.
Frequently asked questions
Does switching classes reduce my total annual tax?+
No. The total tax you owe for the year is fixed. Switching classes only changes how much is deducted *monthly*. You may owe more or get a refund after your tax return.
Is it mandatory to file a tax return in 3/5?+
Yes. If you choose the 3/5 combination, you are legally required to file an annual income tax declaration (Einkommensteuererklärung).
When should I switch?+
You can switch once a year by submitting a form to the Finanzamt. It's usually done via ELSTER or at your local tax office.
