How Salary Tax Works in Germany
Germany has a progressive income tax system where rates increase as your income rises. The tax you pay depends heavily on your Steuerklasse (Tax Class), which is determined by your marital status and family situation.
In addition to income tax, a significant portion of your gross salary goes toward mandatory social security contributions, including health insurance, pension insurance, unemployment insurance, and long-term care insurance. These costs are typically split 50/50 between the employer and the employee.
