How does TFSA room accumulate?
Your TFSA contribution room is the total amount you can put into a TFSA. It began accumulating in 2009 but only for years you were 18 or older and a resident of Canada.
The Magic of Refilling: Unlike an RRSP, if you withdraw money from a TFSA, that exact withdrawal amount is added back to your contribution room on January 1s of the following year.
How to use this calculator
- 1Year of Birth — Room only starts accumulating the year you turn 18.
- 2Previous Contributions — Subtract every dollar you have ever deposited across all your TFSA accounts.
- 3Add Withdrawals — If you took money out in previous years, that amount increases your current room.
Formula & example
Current Room = (Unused Room from last year) + (Annual Limit) + (Last year withdrawals)
If you were 18 in 2009 and have never contributed, your total room in 2026 would be $102,000.

Frequently asked questions
What if I was out of the country?+
You do not accumulate TFSA room for any year you were a non-resident of Canada for tax purposes.
Does investment growth use up room?+
No. Only contributions use room. If your $10,000 investment grows to $100,000, that $90,000 gain is 'free' room when you withdraw it.
